Missed a Few Days of Your Routine? You Don't Have to Start Over

A broken streak is not a broken habit. Pick up where you stopped, at the same size, with no catching up.

Illustration of Bly

If you skipped your routine for a few days, you don't need to start from scratch. Just pick it up where you left it. The days you already put in didn't go anywhere.

Why "start over" is the first thing that comes to mind

When you mark days on a calendar, one empty square somehow looks bigger than all the filled ones. Twenty days done, and all you can see are the three blanks. Then a voice says: "Well, that's ruined. Back to day one."

But think about it for a second. Those twenty days didn't vanish. Three days off doesn't make your hand forget how to pour a glass of water in the morning. The only thing that disappeared was a number.

A streak is a tool, not a report card

A streak counter was invented to help you. It's there so you can notice, "Oh, I did it again today." When it quietly turns into a grade, the tool has taken the owner's chair.

I have those days too. The days when I don't even open the calendar because I don't want to see the gap. Three days become a week, and a week becomes "that thing I used to do."

The missed days were never the problem. It was how I looked at them.

"Yesterday" is a good enough place to restart

Oddly, deciding to start over makes starting harder. Day one is heavy. It needs a fresh resolution, and it feels like it should be a big deal.

So skip day one and just do today. If it was a glass of water, a glass of water. If it was ten minutes of walking, ten minutes. Exactly what you were doing three days ago, at exactly that size.

You don't have to do double to make up for the gap. It isn't overdue homework.

A routine isn't a line that can't break. It's a place you come back to

That's how I've decided to think about routines. Not a thread that must never snap, but a spot that's still there when you return.

Seen that way, a few empty days aren't much of a story. The spot is still there. You came back. That's enough.

If you've been scolding yourself for a few days off, maybe set that down first. Coming back is already doing well.
